STATES MATTER — NOW MORE THAN EVER

Our work is year-round. It requires a thoughtful, sustained effort to become educated, identify priorities, and develop strong relationships with grassroots organizers and national organizations that are on the ground. In 2026 we will continue to work in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. Learn more about Lean Left’s 2026 Strategy and how you can get involved.

Lean Left connects Vermont activists with meaningful ways to protect voters' rights, engage and educate voters, and get the vote out. We welcome individuals as well as groups. If you are a member of a group that would like more information about the importance of working in swing states, check out our States Matter proposal and schedule a Lean Left presentation for your group. More information can be found here.

What are the most effective actions? A Look at Lean Left Actions—Now through November 2026

Power Hour —
Where the work gets done!
Sundays 4:00-6:00 PM

“Camaraderie," is how one volunteer described what she found at the Lean Left Power Hour. We gather every Sunday to make calls, share our experiences, and find support during these tough times.

Come and see for yourself. We provide you with resource materials and training. You’ll learn about why we’re making these calls, how to use the dialing tool, best practices for handling the script, and more. The most important thing you’ll learn? You’re not alone!

See below for current Power Hour actions.

Virginia

Special Election

Counterbalance what MAGA is doing in Texas, North Carolina, and beyond by turning out the vote for the April 21st VA Redistricting Special Election.

Sunday Power Hour Action

WE’RE PIVOTING TO VIRGINIA!

For the next two Sundays, April 12 and April 19, we'll be calling Virginia voters and asking them to Vote Yes on redistricting!

This election is happening because MAGA is rigging elections in Texas, North Carolina, and other states, redrawing Congressional maps to give themselves more power.

But Virginia voters have the chance to fight back for the entire country by voting YES in this Special Redistricting election. This temporary, emergency action will let Virginians level the playing field and defend our democracy.

  • Call rural VA voters with Rural GroundGame and Red2Blue. We must let voters know that this election is about protecting fair elections. Training provided by Red2Blue; all you need is your computer. Join Lean Left volunteers on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 PM through the election. Sign up here.

  • Misleading mailers targeting Black communities are circulating, making direct voter outreach more important than ever. More than 310,000 Virginians have already voted, but turnout is still lagging among key Black communities. Call these voters with Center for Common Ground, Tues & Thurs at 6 pm. If you’d like to call on your own, watch the training slides for how to use their dialer, then pick a county and start making calls. All you need is your computer.

A POWER HOUR ACTION

Call PA voters and encourage them to register before the May primary. We will give voters the tools they need to register to vote in time for the primary. All you need is your computer; the calling tool is Scale to Win (autodialer). Full training provided during Power Hour, Sundays at 4 pm. Sign up here.

Other actions you can take:

Call PA voters with Promote the Vote. Call voters to make sure they are aware of the primary, help them check their registration, and make sure they know their polling location. Promote the Vote will provide training on the dialer and the script at the start of EVERY Phone Bank. All you need is your computer. Thursdays 6-8 pm. Sign up here.

In-person canvassing in North Carolina. Talking with voters early and often about their local legislative candidates will turn out votes for this year's top of the ticket: Democrat Roy Cooper, running to flip a U.S. Senate seat, and Democrat Anita Earls, who is running to retain her seat on the NC Supreme Court, currently controlled by the GOP. Canvass April 9-12; limited housing available. Indicate your interest and find more information here.

Join New Rural Project and Vote Riders for a virtual text bank. Make sure every voter in North Carolina has the ID they need to cast a ballot that counts under the new voter ID laws. Training provided; cell phone and computer necessary. Wednesday, April 8. Sign up here.
