Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.
— John Lewis at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, March 1, 2020

It all started with a speech…

Rep. John Lewis’ guiding principle to get in “good trouble, necessary trouble” is our inspiration for the Good Trouble Cafe. John Lewis taught us to speak up, do something, and never give up.

But this work can be hard! We’ve been doing this work for six years; it will be nearly eight years by the time we reach the 2024 election. That’s why we created the Good Trouble Cafe, where small groups gather together to have fun and do political work.

The Opening of a New Cafe

Modeled after our Resistance Cafes, created during the 2020 election, a Good Trouble Cafe is a social gathering that promotes political education, discussion, and action. Each Cafe is unique: some Cafes consist of only a few friends or neighbors, some are open to any activist in the community. Each Cafe decides how they balance socializing with political action; each Cafe chooses their discussion topics, the ways they want to pitch in, and when and how often they meet, including whether it’s for coffee, a glass of wine, or a meal.

Lean Left is here every step of the way. Learn more about starting your own Good Trouble Cafe using our Cafe Leaders Guide.
