Take Action

Our work is year-round. It requires a thoughtful, sustained effort to become educated, identify priorities, and develop strong relationships with grassroots organizers and national organizations that are on the ground. We have four target states: North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.

Three Steps to Get Started!

  1. Pick an action in one of the states below. Most organizations host their own trainings. You’ll receive information when you sign up.

  2. Do your research: use our Toolkit if you need a refresher on phone banking or texting; read the Briefing Sheet for each state.

  3. Contact the state organizer if you need more information on how to get started or if you want to join a state team.

STATES MATTER — NOW MORE THAN EVER

One thing is clear: the fight is just beginning, and the 2022 election will be a battle at the state legislative level. Nothing less than the future of reproductive justice and who is able to maintain control over their own bodies is at stake. The time to act is now. We must leave no stone unturned in our fight to elect pro-choice state legislators.
— Sister District Project

NC is now the southernmost state in the Southeast with safe, legal access to reproductive health care and, in the years to come, will likely support thousands of women across the South in need of abortion services. But continued abortion care in NC comes down to which party controls the legislature in 2022 and beyond.

  • Make History with Cheri Beasley. Cheri Beasley is poised to make history as the first black woman from NC to serve in the U.S. Senate. Her race—touted as one of the Dems’ best chances to flip a Senate seat—is now rated a tossup against Ted Budd, a steadfast Trumper. At Make History With Cheri Beasley, we’ll hear directly from Cheri Beasley about the state of her race and how we, as out-of-state volunteers, can help her and her down-ballot colleagues win in November. Sign up for Make History With Cheri Beasley, a Lean Left co-sponsored event on Wed, July 27th at 8:30 pm ET.

  • ProChoice Postcards to NC Voters. We are writing to prochoice Democrats who sometimes skip the midterms. This hosted by Activate America in partnership with Planned Parenthood Action Fund and local organizations. Read more and sign up here.

  • Register voters with Field Team 6. Sign up here.

  • Sign up as a Voter Protection Hotline Volunteer to ensure voters do not find barriers to casting their ballots . Sign up here.

North Carolina

Briefing Sheet

Contact Lean Left’s North Carolina organizer Dana for more information, technical support, and/or to join the North Carolina Team.

Access to abortion is still legal in New Hampshire up to 24 weeks, but the state legislature is dominated by the right-wing of the GOP. Flipping the State House of Representatives is critical to preventing the possibility of an outright ban.

  • With Ballot Inspector recruitment behind us, the Organize New Hampshire Voter Protection Team is shifting focus back to recruiting for Hotline and Poll Observers. For now, the Protection Team will begin to host a phonebank every Monday from 4-6 pm ET to make these calls - and address other projects as needed! If you'd like to sign up, please register HERE.

  • Dialing for Democracy Having conversations with voters is the best way to connect! Join in with the SBA team and Organize NH to connect with New Hampshire voters to ensure Senator Maggie Hassan, Congressman Chris Pappas and down-ballot candidates can win! We will be ID’ing support for candidates, using Deep Canvassing techniques to move the needle towards Democrats, and cleaning up the voter rolls. SIGN UP HERE.

  • Training with Swing Blue Alliance for Deep Canvassing Conversations with Voters! Knocking on doors and having real conversations with voters is effective. This canvassing approach is geared toward listening to voters' concerns and helping us hone the issue message for the campaign. These techniques can be used on phones and at the doors. SIGN UP HERE

  • Let’s Take It to the Streets! Canvassing opportunities. If you think you want to canvass in NH from now until November, here's your opportunity to say YES! Sign up here to let us know you are interested.

New Hampshire

Briefing Sheet

Contact Lean Left’s New Hampshire organizer Rebecca for more information or support.

Wisconsin

Briefing Sheet

Contact Lean Left’s Wisconsin organizer Ann for more information or support.

Support Gov Evers to keep abortion available in Wisconsin! Wisconsin has a 1849 law on the books that bans abortion. Dem Gov Tony Evers has said that he will not appoint district attorneys who would enforce the ban and will use his clemency powers to free anyone jailed under the ban.

  • Gov Evers is the sole obstable to a complete abortion ban. He is in a tough re-election fight. Donate here. If you want other ways to get involved, email Ann.

Keep WI Republicans from gaining a super majority in the State legislature. Booting RonJon out of the Senate would be wonderful.  However, the most important races in Wisconsin are keeping Tony Evers in the governor’s office and ensuring that Republicans cannot gain a veto proof majority in the state legislature.  In June, SCOTUS ensured that Wisconsinites have to live with arguably the most gerrymandered state legislative map in the country for another 10 years.

The best way to help remotely?  Make calls with Sister District. No experience necessary.  You will get the training and support that you need.  All you need is a strong desire to support democracy in the Badger State.

  • Sister District National Phonebank Wednesdays at 6:00 ET

  • Wisconsin Sister District Phonebank Thursdays at 7:00 ET

Pennsylvania

Briefing Sheet

Contact Lean Left’s Pennsylvania organizer Ann for more information or support.

For now, abortion remains legal for Pennsylvanians. Governor Tom Wolf has been a strong advocate for abortion rights in the state, vetoing several bills passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly that would further restrict abortion access. However, Gov Wolf is term-limited.  Democrats also have a shot at flipping the General Assembly further cementing women’s reproductive rights.  However, if things go the other way, Pennsylvania will look more like the south rather than the northeast.

Help flip the state legislature blue! Thanks to a non-partisan redistricting committee that created a more fair map, Democrats have a decent chance at flipping the state legislature blue!  Democrats can then go on the offensive to improve the lives of Pennsylvanians rather than playing defense with a veto. The best way to help remotely? Make calls with Sister District.  Join supported phone banks. All training and support is supplied.

Support newly registered voters! The New Pennsylvania Project plans to register 1500-2000 new voters, some are new citizen, every month through the election. Red 2 Blue is ensuring that these newly registered voters off on the right foot! They are contacting newly registered Democrats and Independents to ask if their registration materials have arrived and if not, help them find out their registration status and fix any problems.   Contact Ann to get connected.

Women to Women Wednesdays with Turn PA Blue and the PA House Democrats. A weekly phonebank to Pennyslvania’s women voters. These powerful conversations include a discussion of abortion, gun violence, and other sensitive issues.

Interested in voter protection in Pennsylvania? There are a number of different opportunities to help ensure that voters can make their voices heard. These actions vary over time. Ann has volunteered with the PA Dems voter protection team for several years, please email her to learn more.

About Postcards

In 2022 Lean Left will be laser-focused on bringing forward actions we believe will make the best use of your time and have the most impact. We expect to have fewer postcard actions available for our four states, so, at times, we may offer opportunities to write postcards in other states. You can find those opportunities here.

When we have postcards actions with Reclaim Our Vote, you can sign up for addresses through their self-serve address distribution system called VoterLetters.
